Start with the right council
Chelmsford City Council is the starting point for services such as household waste collection, council tax, housing, planning and city parks. Essex County Council covers other responsibilities, including highways, school admissions, libraries and social care.
Use the service pages rather than assuming the organisation named on an old notice is still the right contact. If you live near a boundary, check the local authority for your own address. This is an independent community guide, not an official council website.
Parish, town and community representation
The wider Chelmsford area includes several kinds of local council, and some urban areas do not have a parish council. The city council’s “Who represents you” page explains how to find your local representatives.
For village facilities, local meetings and community notices, start with the relevant parish or town website. Writtle’s council website, for example, links local news and community information. Do not assume that a directory area name identifies the council responsible for a particular street.
Libraries and useful local information
Essex Libraries is the place to check your nearest branch, current opening arrangements, library membership and activities. Use the branch information for Chelmsford or the settlement where you live rather than assuming city-centre hours apply everywhere.
Libraries can be a useful first stop for finding activities and information, while the directory’s community category helps you look for local groups, leisure providers and venues.
Halls, groups and spaces to meet
If you are arranging a class, club meeting or celebration, start with the hall or venue’s own booking contact. Ask about access, capacity, facilities and hire terms for the activity you have in mind.
Search the local area where people will attend: Great Baddow, Springfield, Chelmer Village, Broomfield, Galleywood and the surrounding villages each have their own community networks. South Woodham Ferrers should be treated as a place in its own right, not simply a city-centre neighbourhood.
Travel, roads and everyday service requests
For a road or pavement issue, school transport question or other county service, use Essex County Council’s current service directory. For parking, bins and other city services, start with Chelmsford City Council.
Keep official contacts separate from commercial listings. A business shown here provides its own services; appearing in the directory does not make it a council contractor or an endorsed public service.
